The Animated Series' Showrunner Reveals Rosie and Alastor's Origin Tale Serves as a Huge Season 3 Tease
Devoted fans of the show finally received a much-anticipated origin story in the second season's episode 4, titled “It's a Deal.” This episode will probably spark extensive conversation and pose many questions about the nature of one particular demon Overlord who seems far more powerful than any character before realized. The new revelations include a look into the human life of a fan-favorite character before his demise and condemnation to Hell.
A Significant Hint for Future Seasons
The show's creator shared an inside detail about the episode – it serves as a huge hint for season 3. She also offered further details into the process of designing the human versions of her demonic animated characters.
Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back reveals that popular personality Alastor, the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the realm beyond beforehand to obtain a strong position in Hell. Rosie, the charismatic leader the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.
This raises an important query: How is Rosie sufficiently strong to raise Alastor over all other Demonic Sinners?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves so much, moving into the third season,” the creator explains. “Clearly that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The answer might be many things, but the answer is in season 3. I am thrilled for fans to see it.”
It is uncertain the duration viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the creator frequently notes that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Nevertheless, she states holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of maintaining the second season's focus in the right places.
“The challenge of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that gradually, and allowing that be gratifying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The showrunner promises that season 3 will address the questions followers have been asking, like why the cannibal leader ordered Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these individuals are making, and everything — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides a further look into what the main characters of Sinner Demons looked like as humans, following after viewing another character's Victorian-era human form in episode 2. She says that a lot of thought was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold great significance,” she says. “They range from looking really different from their demon form to seeming almost identical. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with a design that represents the personality, versus selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We opted for creating something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one really had long hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we think the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we design the human versions of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and figure out. I'm excited for people to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
