Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel ran across the track immediately ahead of his car

The dangerous situation took place on the third rotation when track officials were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to swap his broken nose section

Racer's Instant Response

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals running across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Evidently there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be permitted to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the events

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA

"On lap three, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy officials were canceled and a double yellow flag was shown in that zone"

"We are still investigating what happened after that point"
