Accused Bondi Beach Shooters Acted Independently and Did Not Undergo Training in the Philippines, Investigators State.
The two suspected gunmen responsible for the lethal shooting at a Jewish gathering on Bondi Beach, that took 15 lives, reportedly been lone actors, as stated by national law enforcement.
Investigators also confirmed that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, 24, journeyed to the Philippines on 1 November. Their travel plans included landing in the main city Manila before traveling onward that same day to Davao City. The father and son flew back to Sydney on 29 November.
No Evidence of Training During Stay
Authorities have stated the duo did not undergo any form of attack-related training or "planning" during their stay in the Philippines. Preliminary investigations from local authorities point to they "rarely left" their accommodation.
The incident—described as Australia's most severe mass shooting since 1996—has been formally classified as a act of terrorism.
"We are currently examining the material," she stated, explaining that early evaluations suggest that "these individuals are believed to have operated independently."
National law enforcement Commissioner Krissy Barrett told media on Tuesday that CCTV footage showing the accused attackers' whereabouts in the Philippines had been handed over to domestic investigators.
"Our investigation shows little to no indication to support the idea these alleged offenders were affiliated with a broader terrorist cell, or were acting on orders from overseas entities to perpetrate an act of violence," Commissioner Barrett emphasized.
Yet, the men were also not in the Philippines for tourism, Commissioner Barrett noted. She underscored that, as the inquiry is still active, new evidence may surface.
Inspiration and Legal Charges
Earlier, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese commented it seems both alleged attackers were "motivated by Islamic State" beliefs.
During the incident, Sajid Akram was shot dead by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—equipped with firearms—are accused of having opened fire on guests at the Hanukkah celebration.
Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the shooting, has been formally accused of 59 crimes. These encompass 15 charges of murder and one count of carrying out a act of terrorism. He is expected to face court in April.
Immigration Particulars
In the days following the attack, border authorities in the Philippines indicated that the father had entered the country using an Indian passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.
The pair had listed the metropolis of Davao as their final destination. Their booked journey back to Australia was for Sydney.
Davao is a sprawling city on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary island in the south. The region is known because, Militant groups have been known to be active in impoverished parts of central and south-western Mindanao.
