2026 Declared the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this rise, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming seems particularly powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.

Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
